EXPLORE

Amanda Cadabra and The Twilight Toxin

I had no idea back then, of course. But the path to this story began 8 years ago, when in a flash, out of the blue, and for no reason I have ever been able to discern, I knew with absolute certainty that the main characters had a strong connection with Cornwall.

I began studying the grades for the Cornish Language, and by 2020, the time was ripe for a book set there, The Strange Case of Lucy Penlowr, with the certainty that this would be the springboard for a story arc with every third book set in the south west of Britain.

The fire back in the 1980s that is central to the book held the vital seed for The Twilight Toxin as events of that night inexorably draw covert witch Amanda Cadabra back to the last place she would want to visit, with the intrepid Detective Inspector Thomas Trelawney.

As the book began to come to me, some three years ago, I knew where the body was found but not their identity, nor who the killer would turn out to be, and whether justice would find them in a lethal or non-lethal manner. But last year, it started to arrive, the answer to all of these questions, the path that would take them into the heart of the enemy's lair, the ultimate test for Amanda, and where the climax would play out.

And now it unfolds for you, a body in a troubling place, an unknown murder weapon of potentially legendary power, a killer close by, watching, waiting. As the cast of loved characters gathers in a series of entertaining, even embarrassing moments, and Thomas getting to see a surprising side of his father, for a foray into the lion's den, travelling back into the past for a crucial win-or-lose two hours, Amanda and Thomas's lives are on the line.

Fortunately, Tempest, Amanda's irascible feline familiar, is on hand to lend his wry commentary, and mirth is never far away.

The series, literally, reaches new heights in this intriguing sequel, to puzzle and delight lovers of humorous fantasy mystery, where Harry Potter meets Agatha Christie, in a 'timelessly British' supernatural whodunnit. A mirthful mix of vintage and modern-day, suspense, daring and excitement, with a happy ending.

Step in to join the delightful Amanda, the superior Tempest, the attractive but by-the-book Inspector Trelawney, his amused mentor, Former Chief Inspector Hogarth, the unusual Lucy, the late aristocratic Senara and the warm-hearted Cornishman Perran, and an assemblage of suitably suspicious and villainous characters. Each individual has their own hidden depths to surprise you along the way, as you cross the border into the ancient land of Kernow.

The Characters

  • Amanda is a covert witch, reclusive but beloved resident of Sunken Madley, trained by her grandparents in magic and keeping a low profile. But can she do that in an all too public gaze as Amanda goes where only she can go?
  • Tempest is Amanda's grumpy feline reincarnated by grandparents Perran and Senara during Amanda's teens. Regards humans as an inferior species. Will he stay awake long enough to aid his pet human when the crunch comes?
  • Detective Inspector Thomas Trelawney of the Devon and Cornwall Police now assigned to Amanda's village where one too many murders have taken place? And will he ever be comfortable with magic?
  • Senara and Perran Cadabra are the late grandparents and adoptive parents to Amanda. Enjoying life after death on an another plane of existence, can they be dragged away from their social engagements for sufficent time to lend a hand?

The Plot

  • It's the last place she'd want to go. But it's also the place where only Amanda can enter. Granny is amused and Tempest, her irascible feline familiar is entertained. But murder is no laughing matter. Especially when it's a calling card.
  • They say the past is the past. But what if it's the only way forward in the present? Will a risky return to the night of a fire back in the 1980s really help?
  • Inspector Trelawney is diligently pursuing ‘normal methods’, but are they enough with a killer still close by, and letting the next intended victims know it.
  • They say the only sure thing about luck is that it will change. Will Amanda's hold as she, the inspector and their all too willing motley crew penetrate the stronghold of her ancestral foes. One night. Two hours. The stakes are high on the only road to the murderer and the truth of The Twilight Toxin.
  • Amanda Cadabra and The Twilight Toxin is a humorous, suspenseful, entertaining tale that draws the reader into a magical world, from a quaint English village to remote Cornwall, with unforgettable characters, a cat with attitude, and the most intriguing of urban fantasy mysteries.

At the gates

The dog was always nervous at this point in the walk. The estate perimeter was boarded up. There was nothing to see, and it had long been abandoned to the encrousing wild grasses and ivy. Even so, Flussy always made sure to hurry past, not even sniffing to 'read' the news of other dogs or foxes who had passed by.
